GATE Science - Green Fingers - Term 3

Room 19 students Caitlin, Chloe, Anton and Olivia are part of the GATE Science group this term working with Colin Gover, our technology teacher at MVS. In their first two weeks they have learnt a lot about how plants grow and about the process called germination. The rest of Room 19 has been following the process with high interest as well thanks to Olivia and Caitlin for sharing their learning back to the class.

The members of year 5 GATE group have planted seeds of peas and documented their germination over the course of a couple of weeks. The seeds will be planted in our school's veggie garden and hopefully harvested soon. Lets hope the GATE students will share with us when they make a meal out of these peas as well. You can find some pictures of the germination process and The GATE group below.

Enjoy :)

Food For Thought - Pak'n Save Trip - Week 2

On Wednesday, Room 19 had their trip to Pak'n Save with a few amazing parent helpers and our awesome coach Andrea who has taught the class a lot about healthy eating and how to read food labels this week.

The children learnt a lot about what treat/occasional foods are and what healthy food is by reading the food labels on the packaging. It has been a week of interesting and worthwhile learning!

Thanks to Andrea, we have received a 60$ voucher for Pak'n Save which we will use to plan and then make a healthy lunch for the class.

Bon apetite!

Here are some photos from our trip:

Gate Art - Murals

      Gate Art - Murals

Gate art in term 2 was very very fun. We, Sinead and
Charlotte, did it on a Thursday in periods 3 & 4. The
year 6 students did it with us, but in periods 1 & 2.

This is how we made our artwork:
First, we had to practice making the edges inside of
things really neat and straight. After that, we had the
concrete things of the forest and the sea. There were
numbers in each bit. The paint pots that had the
number on the lid we would paint in those parts that
had that same number. Once we had done the first
layer, we started on the second layer. After a couple
of weeks we finished it. One of the murals got put up
before the holidays and the other got put up during
the holidays.

You can see our work by the hall. The names that you can see at the bottom of the murals are the names
of the artists who contributed to them. We both
worked on of them, but we worked more on the sea

Breaker's Basketball - Term 1

From late term 1, just before lockdown, Room 19 was lucky enough to get a basketball session from the Breaker's Basketball Team to teach them some skills.

Here are some photos from our worry-free pre-COVID world at school:

Maths and Art

Who would have thought that Art and Maths go so well hand in hand?

Room 19 has been exploring geometry and measurement this term. They learnt how to handle rulers with accuracy, and some have even tried out handling compasses and protractors to come up with some amazing Astheometry (Athetic Geometry) artworks.

Check out Room 19 after the holidays and see if you can spot your child#s artwork. This example is my own :)

Poupou Art Term 2

If you haven't had a chance yet to check out our Poupou art that we completed last term, then you should come into Room 19 and have a look around. Every child made their own unique poupou with a short description what it means to them.

Here are some examples:

Array Hunt - Fun with Mutliplication

Term 2 - Maths

Room 19 went on an array hunt at the start of term 2. The focus of this acivity was to understand that arrays are real world examples of multiplication and use what we have found to make the connection to our maths.

As you can see, Room 19 had a good time hunting down all possible arrays they could find on the school grounds.
